Two full classes in one, Art of Botany combines scientific study, experiments, and ecological understanding with step-by-step botanical illustration instruction. Right and left brain learners alike will love this year-long course.
Art of Botany marries the scientific exploration of a high school-level botany course with a complete botanical drawing class. However, what students really walk away with is a commitment to being cooperative, contributing, mutualistic members of our environment and communities.
Using the student manual ($30), Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, students will take a deep dive into the inner workings of the Plantae and Fungi kingdoms while applying their newly obtained knowledge to their understanding of their relationship with the world in which we live. Where do we live and how do we impact our environment? What do we eat and how does our food get on our table? All of this learning is augmented by a burgeoning appreciation for the delicate beauty of the botanical world as students are guided step-by-step on the elements of art (line, shape, form, color, tone, texture, and space) and how to execute botanical illustrations.

Students will read the books String, Straightedge, and Shadow by Julia E. Diggins, The Beginner's Guide to Constructing the Universe by Michael S. Schneider, and The Golden Ratio by Mario Livio and complete a series of mathematical tasks throughout the year in our "Nautilus Challenge". The year culminates with an epic math competition called "The Golden Bowl" with the winner earning the coveted "Golden Bowler" award.
In addition to the books we will be reading, students will need a basic calculator (graphing calculator is not necessary), a binder with notebook and graphing paper, a protractor, compass, and pencils.

In a time when non-sensical social media arguments and talking head media propaganda prevails, it is more important than ever that our children understand how to formulate logical arguments and how to spot when someone is using logical fallacies to try to win a debate.
Students will read famous articles and read and listen to notable speeches while dissecting the art of constructing persuasive arguments. A logical fallacy will be explored each week and students will learn how to avoid them.
In the second semester, we will learn about different forms of debate and the phases of a structured debate. Students will have ample time in class to practice their debating skills. We will end the year with a competitive debate.
